bohemian rhapsody review

Bohemian Rhapsody

As a big Queen fan, I’ve been so excited to see the new film Bohemian Rhapsody at the cinema.

There alone; me, myself and pie. Yes, the cinema I went to has vegan pie’s that you can take in with you. It’s been ages since I ‘ve done a solo cinema trip and it was bliss.

I know Bohemian Rhapsody has had mixed reviews, but I really enjoyed it.

The thing is there is no way you can capture all of Freddie’s life and all that went on with Queen in a two-hour time frame. For example, some of the order of events aren’t accurate, but for me, that didn’t matter. What came across in this film was the essence of Queen. Freddie’s personality and his multifacetedness is difficult to distil, but Rami Malek does an excellent job.

Artistic license has been used, some elements of the story have been made up, or exaggerated. You can read about some of these examples here on IMDB. Despite this, and perhaps even because of it, I think Freddie would love this film because, it’s so much more glamorous this way darling.

Let’s be honest, any film that has me crying in the first five minutes is always going to have a place in my heart

Even the other band members are really well cast, understated, and not caricature-like at all. Which I think would have been easy to slip into as there have been so many impersonations and parodies of Queen over the years. The non-verbal communication between the band when on stage, the posture and the costume/clothing feels all very authentic. The Live-Aid part is stunningly recreated.

I came out of this film with soggy tissues from the many times I cried, but feeling uplifted and with a desperate need to listen to all the Queen albums again, and Freddie’s solo stuff.

Freddie Mercury reminds us all that it’s okay to be ourselves.

Have you seen Bohemian Rhapsody? I’d love to know what you thought.

  1. Queen are Jon’s fave ever band (second one is manic street preachers, just so you know), I might take him to see it! I’ve heard it’s amazing!
