I’ve been meaning to go to the Slippery Belle Burlesque night in Manchester for ages now and I finally got to go on Friday 22nd July. I had such a brilliant time, it is a great nights entertainment.
The venue is the upstairs room at the Star & Garter in Manchester- literally five minutes walk from Picadilly train station. I walked into the room and felt transported back in time.
I felt like I was in a Speakeasy in 1930’s America and the American mood was enhanced by the Compere for the evening, Crimson Skye whose Texan drawl, comic timing and super expressive face had the audience, “Yeehawing” within minutes.
Its £8 to get in or £6 if you have valid NUS card, and you get loads of entertainment for your money. There were two new acts,‘Pinky DeVille‘ and ‘Velvet Storm’, which are part of a competition ran every month called Ecdysiast Encounters- the winner each month goes into the final which I’m guessing will be at the end of the year.
The other acts were Jeu Jeu La Foille, Ava Amore, Laureate O’Hara and my favorite Miss Auroraboobrealis who had me doubled over laughing so much at her first act (each performer does two acts- bargain!) which was an unusual homage the The Purple One- AKA Prince.
The whole thing is organised and ran by Burlesque lovely, Bella Besame, who also teaches and performs Burlesque across the country.
I’m afraid to say that despite us getting there at 8pm all the tables were already full!! A good sign though, we ended up tucked in next to the DJ Mikey Wong- which wasn’t such a bad place to be although all the photographs I took are rubbish as I was only using my phone and too far away, too dark etc etc.
So you’ll have to make do with some pictures of me! I wore a leopard print off the shoulder dress from eBay with Vivienne Westwood black Maryjane’s! Stupidly have not got pictures of either, but was very proud of the hair I managed to create seeing as a couple of the pin curl I had in were still wet 24 hours later I had to put it up. You can really tell form the pictures but its a pompadour at the front and a roll at the back!
The next Slippery Belle is Friday 12th August, will you be going?
