Looking After Sensitive Skin in Winter

November 23, 2016Susan

Do you have sensitive skin? Do you find it gets worse in the Winter months?

Well you aren’t alone. After years of trial and error with my own sensitive skin, I think I’ve finally found some products that manage to sooth and protect, without causing further skin reactions. The harsh cold and wind we have at this time of year causes havoc for sensitive skin, especially when added to the drying effect of central heating.

There are so many products out there now for sensitive skin, each with its own list of ingredients. And its this little list that I personally have to pay a lot of attention to. I have sensitivities to a number of things including fragrance/perfume (inc essential oils), lanolin, and some preservatives often used in cosmetics/skincare products.

Heck, my skin can react to temperature and even water.

My favorite product for the skin on my face right now is Weleda White Mallow Face Cream. Its actually part of their Baby skincare range. I find this really protects my face from the cold and wind, it’s fairly thick and a little goes a long way. I use this in the morning and occasionally at night if my face has that tingly, tight feeling. It’s rich without being greasy and I’ve missed it on the mornings I’ve forgotten to apply it.

Regarding cosmetics, to be honest I don’t wear half as much makeup as I did when I was younger. My skin just doesn’t tolerate it as much as it previously did. I also think older skin often looks better with less makeup- less matt more glow, ya know?

Less but better as with so many things in life. I really rate Marks & Spencers Autograph range, their lipsticks are great, as are the blushers and mascaras. I’ve not had any skin reactions using these products and they are also cruelty free too. I often wear one of their moisturising lipsticks to protect my lips on the school run.

To take off any makeup, or just have a deeper cleanse, I use Balance Me Cleanse & Smooth Face Balm. Now this does have some essential oils in it and is slightly exfoliating, both of which I’ve never been able to tolerate. But I tried a sample of from a magazine a few months ago and I’m hooked.

Because its a cleanser the essential oils aren’t really on my face for that long, which I think is the reason I’ve been able to continue using it. This balm feels (and smells) really luxurious and its actually a pleasure to take off makeup and daily grime now, rather than a chore.

I find my hands also tend to flare up more at this time of year, itchy and sore can begin to feel like the norm. I’m really loving the Hemp Hand  Protector from The Body Shop at the moment (along with over 5000 rave reviewers on their site). It’s rich but sinks in quickly, and has a subtle, calming smell. I have this by the sink in my kitchen as its where I remember to put it on the most. I probably should get another tube for my handbag though, asap.

I also use Formula Night Cream  (when I remember!) this is from M&S and is part of their Sensitive Skin range. They’ve changed the packaging since I last bought it, that’s how long it lasts. This is such a great price for a Night cream that doesn’t give me a reaction. It’s lighter on the skin than the Weleda cream which I find better for night time as I don’t get stuck to the pillow!

Last but not least the Dermologica UltraCalming Mist is something I turn to throughout the year. In the Winter months its great for calming my skin down on entering the warm dry house, from the cold, wet and windy outdoors. So instead of having a flushed, hot and irritated face which doesn’t know what is going on, I have a calmer, all be it a little moist, face. I’ve also used this mist over makeup if I’ve felt like my skin was about to start complaining and it’s worked a treat.

What are your favorite Winter skincare products?

Spread the love

I’m so bad when it comes to sticking to a skincare routine, but the product you mentioned has struck my fancy. It’ll be so convenient to have a product that can take of my make-up and hydrate my skin at the same time!

ooh I need to bear some of these in mind, I hate the dry skin feeling having the heating on brings. I’ve recently discovered avocado oil, super hydrating for the skin, little bit goes a long way!!

I might show my husband this. He gets eczema and is always looking for a good oily cream. He goes back to Cetraben a lot but the baby cream sounds good!

I’m a weleda Advisor, so obviously biased. But wanted to say we also do a “weather protection” cream (along with many many other fantastic and suitable products).

If you ever wanted to trial some more, I’d be happy to send samples.

I love balance me products, they are stunning. I’m also a huge fan of Crabtree hand cream too!!! I have been using a much heavier day cream on ‘make up free’ days, almost a night cream as my cheeks get so dry x

I don’t spend enough time taking care of my skin. And I really should. Hand cream is something I only used “for best” which is a bit ridiculous considering the amount of battering my hands get. Will add some of these products to my shopping list!

I need to try some of these. My skin is odd it can be sensitive at times but it’s my hands that are sensitive. i’m prone to eczema and have to watch what i put on my face as it’ll be fine for there but will irriate my hands as i apply it.

Will look out for some of these x

Eczema is such a pain isn’t it! I guess that’s why there are so many different products out there- its just finding the right one for you

Brilliant selection and really useful as I’m the same! My skin “overreacts” to a change in temperature and I’m particularly sensitive to warmth which is SUPER annoying!

I find most brands which are “for sensitive skin” are just awful. they either break me out or feel too harsh. Liz Earle has worked really well for me so far but it’s quite dear.

Yes- Liz Earle is good, I went through a phase of using it but then my skin seemed to go off it! Wah!

It’s my legs that go scaly in the winter – not enough daylight through the permanent wearing of opaque tights! I find cocoa butter helps stop the itching. And for hand cream I love Molton Brown rhubarb and rose. I work in a super hot office so my hands feel tight. I am applying cream all day!

My eczema is playing up ridiculously at the moment, especially on my face, because of the central heating at work so the mist sounds like a great idea to calm it down.

I have used the same skin car regime for most of my life and never really question. I’ve never thought of changing what I use on my skin according to the seasons but it makes total sense! Some of these will definitely make it on to my xmas list x
