Well, because I do have a bit of a thing about floors.
Be it tiles, battered oak floorboards, lino, laminate, stencils, stickers, carpet and rugs- the variety is wide and can be overwhelming if you are having to choose something for your home.
My personal favorite for my home is wooden floors. I think it brings a natural warmth colourwise, and a pared back rustic charm. With the addition of a rug it can also be less noisy then you ‘d expect and more insulated than without.
In the kitchen makeover we did in January we used laminate for the flooring. Due to previous owners doing extensions and changing the floor level in that part of the house, laminate was the best option. I actually do love the laminate flooring (ours is Antique Oak) in the kitchen because its just so incredibly easy to look after and it looks great.
I was worried that with real wooden floorboards adjacent to it that it would look weird, but it actually doesn’t. The laminate almost passes as real wood. Its also great if you’ve got a small family that like sharing their food with the floor…
As we are still working on the house there are some rooms which are crying out for a change of flooring. Allow me to tell you what we plan for our floors in 2016;
- Bathroom floor (and bathroom complete makeover- lets be honest). We are desperate to sort out our bathroom in 2016 and the floor is a big part of that. We’ve not changed it from moving in as its going to be one of those jobs that just keeps on giving (in otherwords taking our cash). There’s some old black lino in there at the moment and I dare not have a look underneath. I think its just floorboards but I dont know what state they are in.
- Dining room. Again not changed the flooring in here, its carpet and goodness knows how old it is. I really cant wait to rip this up. I’m hoping the floorboards in here will be in good condition, like the ones in our living room, so keep your fingers crossed for me there wont be too much work needed here. I’d like to get a large rug for this room that the dining table and chairs can sit on. Its a north facing room so doesn’t get any sun so I’d try and add warmth with texture and colour.
- Stairs and landing. I’m in a bit of a quandary about this area as I’ve always wanted a stair runner with those brass rods across to keep it in place. I think its a classic look but need to figure out what type of carpet I’d want and what to do on the landing. Part of me wants no carpet at all though and just have painted stairs, but I’m concerned about the noise. Would it be like a herd of elephants coming down the stairs when I shouted, “tea’s ready!”? Do let me know if you’ve experienced this!?
