The Vignettist

Vignettist: a person who makes vignettes

Vignette: any small endearing scene, view, picture, etc

Hello fellow plant lovers, I know you are out there. Today I’m sharing some photographs I took of some of my plants.

I love to create small set ups or tableau’s for photography. Styling an area of my home so it evokes a certain mood or feeling. Perhaps bringing the viewer in, piquing their curiosity.

I’m a vignettist!

I created this vignette for this months Urban Jungle Bloggers theme of Plants and Words.

different ways of displaying houseplants

For this scene I wanted to evoke feelings of time gone by, but also the freshness, inspiration and new growth that comes with owning plants.

The title “The Vignettist” gives these images a feeling of old cinema. Films like The Jazz Singer come to mind. Maybe Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush, perhaps even the more modern; The Artist.

The Barber board which the title is mounted on is also of a different era. Reinforcing the old and new themes I love.

I feel a little like I’m back on my Fine Art degree sharing all this;  discussing the why’s and wherefore’s of my creative decision making!

I hope you find it interesting?

I never used plants before to create art, but they are so full of life that they are the perfect subject.

skulls and plants

This tableau of plants and words is sitting on a very old chest of drawers (find out more about the drawers in this video) and the planters are all new except for the peachy one at the back with a matching saucer, which is vintage. The African figurines were via a car boot sale and the plants themselves are mostly Ikea, supermarket and Plant Shop Manchester, which are based in Stockport.

  1. I love the idea of being a ‘Vignettist’ and I have to agree that breaking down your creative decisions does sound a bit a justification during art at uni. (I remember it well!) I’m loving the use of the skull desk tidy as a planter too and it all looks great together. Now I fancy being a vignettist rather than the things I should be doing today.

    1. Haha!! Cringe! I’m not sure why I felt I needed to explain! Thanks lovely x

      1. Haha! Not cringe! I liked it, made me smile and remember the craziness of justifying everything at uni. And, on a side note, I’m thinking of making a mini version of your Christmas cake – looks yummy! Xx

      2. Oh mini ones are such a good idea!

  2. That looks great, it’s a very nicely designed and orchestrated vignette!

  5. Ah this brings back memories from when I first started blogging years ago and followed lots of wonderful American blogs. They were always talking about and showcasing their beautiful vignettes. I love that there is now a name for a person who makes them !
