Bedroom makeover beginnings

So we are in the process of finally renovating and decorating our bedroom.

You might remember I shared some “before” photos recently of our bedroom when we first moved in. Find the slideshow here.

Our bedroom makeover has been pretty slow going to be honest. I think because it’s a room that we don’t spend time in during the day that its priority seems to be less. I’m not sat looking at it most of the day like I am my living room or kitchen, so the things I don’t like aren’t exactly screaming at me… Only when I go to bed in the evening or wake up in the morning.

I think it’s because the moments spent in the bedroom are at either end of the day, is actually why we should make this room a really high priority.

How you feel on waking sets you up (or down) for the rest of your day… How you feel at bedtime has really got to be conducive to a good and restful sleep. So we should really choose a paint colour and get on with it!

Perhaps because its February the bedroom makeover is feeling like a slog, but I am determined we’ll get there in the next month or two. Here’s where we are up to so far.

These gray linen curtains really give the room a softer light. Our bedroom is South facing so can get very bright during the day. This diffused look really helps create a sense of calm in the room.

We changed the curtain pole too, to a black Ikea one to tie in with the Fintorp rail we’ve got on the other side of the room and our current headboard (which was an eBay find).

Despite our massive sliding door wardrobes we fitted a while ago I was still struggling for space. So I reorganised a few things and sent a lot of stuff to the charity shop. The rest, which turned out to be my handbag collection, has now got a new home in this wicker storage box.

The white bedding is also an update, this one is Egyptian cotton which feels so luxurious. For boutique hotel style at home its got to be crisp white bedlinen, with a high thread count. It really just makes the difference for me.

We’ve finally switched the ceiling light too, the old one was too big for the space really and I wasn’t keen on the candelabra style of it. This one has a shorter drop and feels chicer. It is perhaps more modern than I’d usually go for but I think its a good match for the room.
how to get boutique hotel lookI love the colours in this vintage style poster. I’ve tried to find the exact print for you, and failed, but you can find similar here. The frame is actually another eBay purchase, its actually plastic not glass inside which means its lighter and less dangerous to sleep beneath 😉

Looking back as I’m writing this post now, we’ve actually achieved a lot with this room. The main things still to complete are the floor and to paint the walls and ceiling. What colour or shade are your bedroom walls?

  1. There are so many colours in that fab print to choose from! Going dark would make the poster pop more – I recently painted my bedroom a dark moody blue and love it ; )

  4. That vintage print is so cool. Loving your roughed-up floorboards too. I’m in the middle of doing up my bedroom – I say doing up – at the moment, it has no walls. Can’t wait to get to the same stage as you.

    1. Oh the floorboards! they look good but whoever painted them used the wrong type of paint so it peels off and sticks to your feet!! We are going to have to sand them. Enjoy your weekend xx

  5. I love a white bedroom – so calming and peaceful, I find. I love your grey linen curtains x

  6. Well done, it’s always good when you can put plans into action and make a difference to a room. Your ceiling light looks lovely.

  7. It’s all looking so nice. The light may be modern but I think it fits perfectly. Are you keeping the floor as it is or do you have plans for it?

    1. We need to sand the floor and then will just have floorboards/rug combo. Thanks Rachel x

  8. Hey Susie, where did you get your fitted wardrobes from? They’re fab!

    1. B&Q actually- we just had them install the doors then we did the interiors using the Algot system from Ikea

I would love your input
